Customer Reviews

if you have crappy cards at the start of the gameThis expansion pack remedies many of the criticisms of the first Boss Monster, namely the one big criticism that, if you have crappy cards at the start of the game, you'll fall behind everyone else and never catch up. This is also a pretty decent standalone game, meaning that this might make a better overall game than the first Boss Monster. I own both Boss Monster 1 and 2, and I can say that combining decks makes for a more varied game. I would also recommend the house rule of drawing a spell card every three or so turns because other than the two you start off with, unless you grab a handful of rooms that enable you to draw a spell card, you probably will never accumulate more than the two spell cards you started off with. 5Great sequel to a great game!Great Game! I like that this game can be played with the original or on its own since sometimes the two together can be a lot of cards. I also like that both this game and the original are games that are fun, strategy games that are just as fun to play with two people as it is to play with more. It can be hard to find games that are fun for just two people and don't require more. My husband and I love it and it gets very competitive! 5Great, but requires a bit of tweakingBoss Monster is a fun little game, but it's a bit light on variety. Boss Monster 2 improves on this a little with some much-needed additions (and rulebook clarifications), but overall it's the same game. I think this one comes down to how much fun your friends are, and your own personal tweaks on the rules. For example instead of the usual "all players draw a room" phase, we use a draft format -- the player whose turn it is draws several room cards (equal to the player count +1), then chooses one to keep. Then, he/she passes the leftovers around. This helps add a bit more strategy to the game while simultaneously reducing the reliance on luck. We start with the boss with the highest XP, then rotate the turn around the table each new draw phase. We also do a mini-draft with the bosses. Instead of assigning each player a random boss, we instead draw two bosses per person and let the player choose which to keep. Again, just softening randomness and making the game feel more deliberate.Anyway -- if you haven't played Boss Monster and you're trying to figure out where to start, BM2 is the better core set. If you have BM1 and are looking to expand, BM2 will give you far too many cards to use. Best plan for us (we stole this from Reddit) was to combine all of the expansions and then remove ALL duplicate spells and rooms. This makes every dungeon unique and still keeps the game balanced on treasure types.Oh, worth noting: You can only use heroes and epic heroes from ONE set at a time, as the game is balanced around a certain number of regular heroes before you hit the epic heroes. We chose to keep the ones from this set, as they're a bit more interesting than the ones included in BM1. 5This game is really fun. I don t have the base packThis game is really fun. I don t have the base pack, just this standalone expansion. Each game is played in two phases, one that s more geared toward deck building and one that s geared toward survival. I had a lot of fun. 9/10 would recommend. 5Not as good on its own.As an owner of the original Boss Monster I was really excited for this set. Boss Monster is very successful at most parties I bring it to, dispelling the doubts of the other party goers. This advertises itself as a standalone expansion meaning you don't need the original to play with this. While these cards are enough to play My friends have found the cards don't have as much synergy as the original set. Once combined with the original set the new cards really shine. They expand the amount of approaches and strategies present. Like I said the games played with just the expansion weren't quite as fun in comparison to the original or both combined. If you do not own the original Boss Monster I would reccomend buying that instead to see if you like it and then buying this to supplement that game. 4An outstanding sequal to an amazing game! This game is very fun! As a child of the 80's, I spent many hours raiding dungeons on my video game system. What I love about this game is that it flips the role so you are now trying to build a dungeon capable of killing the hero. The style of play and art cause my friends and I to reminisce every time we play. While this is a standalone game, I would suggest adding it to the original! 5Skip the first box and go straight for the secondThey really worked out the kinks and made a much more fun game than the original. I would recommend this plus the item expansion which adds a whole other amazing level of complexity and fun to the game. The artwork and references in this game are awesome. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up! 5Best sequel since Super Mario Bros 3After playing Boss Monster ten or so times, we were ready for more so I plunked down the money for Boss Monster 2. We have yet to mix the cards since we're having so much fun playing Boss Monster 2 on its own. The room and spell cards are more varied than in the original and it seems to be a little more forgiving to players who are dealt lack-luster hands. Much like the original, it's fast-playing and just as fun with two players as it is with four. 5Good on it's own, better with the originalWhile this expansion is a nice stand-alone game, it does work well when mixed with the original. However, if you are going to mix the two then I would recommend that you don't mix the heroes all into one pile. I have found that in doing so, you actually make it nearly impossible to get to the epic heroes deck. Since that takes the challenge out of the game, you should at least limit the amount of normal heroes that you are going to use. 4Truly "The Next Level"Adds some really interesting dynamics to the original Boss Monster, with new ways that cards play on other cards (on the board, in your hand, or otherwise). Plus, it's very versatile - can be played as an all new stand-alone game or as an expansion to the original.Bottom line, if you like Boss Monster, you'll love Boss Monster 2! 5
