Customer Reviews

Works good for a younger childThis is a nice little microscope for a young child. I purchased it for my son who is almost 5 and he is just a little too old for it. I didn't notice that you can't put slides under here as it is really more of a large magnifying glass and not a microscope. It's good for putting (as pictured) shells or flowers or your hand underneath it. Again that is great if that's what you're looking for - I didn't realize this when I ordered it. I would recommend for a younger child around 3 years old more than a 5 or 6 year old. 4ok top, but 1.5x not 8x powerI work with various microscopes in the lab, and I thought a low power inspection scope for a child was a good idea. This one is built ok with a light and easy knobs. The view is acceptable. However, the power I estimate to be 1.5x, not the advertised 8x. That's not enough to give much more than the view without the scope. Very disappointed since a slightly stronger lens wouldn't have cost them more to install. 2very light weight and gets knocked around easily. I would say this is great for a ...My son (five at the time of gifting) was excited about this, but it quickly faded. It really doesn't zoom in enough for him to see the kinds of details he is looking for. I wish it came with slide-like dishes to fill with dirt or sand. It just doesn't have the lasting play/excitement I was hoping for. Its also very, very light weight and gets knocked around easily. I would say this is great for a toddler, not so much an older child. 3Cutest thing ever.I am HUGE into educational toys. HUGE. So I wanted this of course for my almost 3 year old. She absolutely adores it. It's easy for her to use and big enough for her hands to twist the knobs and check out flowers and bugs and whatever else she wants to look at. 5Dollar Store magnifying glass works betterOur four year old is disappointed in this microscope. She says, "I don't see anything new that I can't already see". We pretty much agree. Under the strongest magnification things are just a tiny bit larger but you don't really see anything you can't see with your naked eye so what is the point? Our dollar store magnifying glass works better! On the plus side, the microscope is built pretty well. 1Buy yourself some quiet time and your kids something that lets them use their brains! This is perfect for young, budding scientists or archaeologists. My 5-year-old breaks everything and has not broken this yet. It's tough, well-made and the batteries have lasted FOREVER considering how often it's left on overnight in the backyard. It's been rained on, chewed on by our labradors and dragged through the mud (literally). All I do is hose it off and it keeps working. Great product and great price for some peace and quiet in your life. It will keep the kids busy for at least twenty straight minutes, which feels like forever. So happy we bought it! 5The knob didn't do anything for meThis product had a lot of elements I liked: easy double eyepiece, tray for samples, light, single easy knob, tabletop stablilty. It sounded like it offered a life-size to zoomed-in experience for teach the concept of scale and the microscopic world (this was the main selling point for me). I thought I had realistic expectations of what 2.5-8x magnification would be like (I have binoculars that start with 8x). The product I received seemed like it had maybe 2.5x fixed. I put an object in the tray and could just about tell that it was being magnified at all. Turning the knob had zero amplification effect. I'm glad I had enough time to find something else for my neice. 1Good introduction to scienceThis microscope is a good introduction to using real microscopes. It got our son wanting to go bring in more specimens from outdoors to examine under the scope. However, be sure that you know when you purchase the product that it's magnification is actually quite weak. It might actually be less magnifying than the children's hand-held magnifying glasses that you can purchase for around $5. There are no clips to hold little slides and there's no magnification adjustment to change strength of the scope. However, your child will feel like a real scientist for a year or two should they be around the age of 2-4. After that, I suggest upgrading to a more expensive but actually useful microscope so that you can hold slides in place to examine and actually be able to look at things on a closer level. 3Fantastic product; my son never gets tired of using this! This is so much fun for my four year old. It's super easy to use and works perfectly; you can fit practically anything on the platform for a closer look. The little light is great too. And it can be adjusted for a sharper image, or for those times when the pine cone my son is looking at is bigger than we expected. It's also very sturdy - our new kitten knocked it from the table onto the floor and it survived without a scratch! The quality in general is very satisfying, and I'm a really happy customer. I even purchased the telescope this company offers so my son would have his own when we go to see the solar eclipse on the 21st. I think it's going to make a great back-to-school gift! Or in this case, starting school for the first time gift. Either way, I love this product and love the company, and I'd strongly recommend their products to anyone wanting to introduce their little ones to the wonders of science in a fun, age-appropriate manner! 5Expensive for a toyBought this for my son who loves little science projects. But it doesn't work not even as a magnifying glass. Its for pretend play. They only reason i gave it a 2 star is that it is well made the plastic is not cheap and it looks colorful if you want a pretend one it jus works fine . 2
